Rounding to the nearest 10 and 100
Rounding replaces a number with a nearby "friendly" number that is easier to work with. To round 67 to the nearest ten, ask which multiple of ten it is closer to, 60 or 70. It is 3 away from 70 and 7 away from 60, so it rounds to 70.
Use a number line
Draw a line from 60 to 70 and mark 65 in the middle. Anything to the right of 65 rounds up to 70, anything to the left rounds down to 60. The picture makes it clear why the ones digit is the only one that matters when rounding to tens.
Exactly halfway
A number such as 65 is equally close to 60 and 70. The usual school convention is to round halfway values up, so 65 becomes 70 and 250 rounded to the nearest hundred becomes 300.
Rounding to hundreds
| Number | Nearest 10 | Nearest 100 |
|---|---|---|
| 348 | 350 | 300 |
| 351 | 350 | 400 |
| 1,950 | 1,950 | 2,000 |
| 96 | 100 | 100 |
Look at 348 and 351. They are only 3 apart, but they round to different hundreds because 350 is the halfway point.
Estimate before you calculate. 398 + 205 is about 400 + 200 = 600, so an answer of 1,603 is clearly wrong.
